Higley USD board candidates explain their view of role in discipline

Posted

This is the fourth in a series of questions asked of Higley USD Governing Board candidates. Voters will decide among these four candidates for the two open four-year seats on the board.

As a school board member, how will you approach your role in student & employee discipline?

Brooke Garrett, homemaker, volunteer

I think by clearly stating expectations and boundaries. Communication of these is key. Having a mutual understanding, and then there has to be accountability. That is critical.

Roy Morales, operations support manager

The board member will have to review the facts in the case and determine what is fact and what is fiction. The board will have to refer to both school policies and state laws regarding the best course of action. In some cases, if the subject's case involves a constitutional right, then it may have to referred to a higher authority.

Anna Van Hoek, financial and accounting analyst

In accordance with ARS 15-341

Amanda Wade, stay-at-home mom, applying to school

Context matters in every situation. Should the board need to get involved in a specific situation regarding discipline, as a board member I will make every effort to understand the context around the situation in order to make the most informed choice possible. This means taking the time to hear from individuals involved and work with other board members to come to a productive solution.
