MLB All-Star Game

Which stars made the all-time Diamondbacks All-Star team?

Posted

As Corbin Carroll and Eduardo Rodriguez prepare to take the field Tuesday to represent the Diamondbacks in the MLB All-Star Game, here is a look back at some of the most prolific All-Stars in the team’s history.

This article assembles a roster of Diamondbacks players based on the most All-Star appearances at each position.

Catcher

Miguel Montero (2011, 2014)

Montero and Damian Miller (2002) are the only catchers to make an All-Star team for the Diamondbacks, but Montero is the only one to do it multiple times.

He was one of two representatives, alongside Justin Upton, for the team the only time Chase Field hosted the All-Star Game in 2011. That game for Montero was the only time a Diamondback player was not given a plate appearance in an All-Star Game, though he did enter the game to catch.

First Baseman

Paul Goldschmidt (2013-2018)

Goldy holds the team record for most All-Star appearances at six. His excellence at the plate did not translate to the All-Star Game during his time with the Snakes — he went 2 for 14 across the six games.

Second Baseman

Ketel Marte (2019, 2024-25)

Marte holds the record for most starts in an All-Star Game in Diamondbacks history with three, starting in each of his three appearances. He also got a hit in each game, including a double in the 2019 and 2025 games.

He is a current member of the D-backs but did not make the All-Star Game this year.

Third Baseman

Matt Williams (1999)

Newer fans might recognize Williams better in mascot form from the Legends Race at Chase Field. Though Williams only made one All-Star Game in his six season with the D-backs, he is the only player to ever start the game at third base for the Snakes. He got a hit and was caught stealing in the game, despite attempting just two steals in the regular season that year. It is the only time a D-back has attempted a steal in the All-Star Game.

While fellow Legends Race mascots Randy Johnson and Luis Gonzalez made plenty of All-Star Games with the team, Mark Grace was never an All-Star during his three seasons with the team.

Shortstop

Geraldo Perdomo (2023)

Though he wasn’t named a starter in the game, Perdomo is the only Diamondback to ever be named an All-Star as a shortstop. He had two plate appearances in the game, with a walk and a fly out.

He is a current member of the D-backs but did not make the All-Star Game this year.

Left Fielder

Corbin Carroll (2023-24, 2026)

Carroll joins Goldschmidt as the only Diamondbacks to make three All-Star appearances by age 25.

Last year, Carroll became the only D-back to hit a home run in the All-Star game. Carroll took Tigers pitcher Casey Mize deep in the sixth inning.

Though Carroll has played all outfield positions and now regularly plays right field, he is the left fielder on this roster because the other two fielders exclusively played center and right fields. He also primarily played left field during his first All-Star season in 2023.

Center Fielder

Devon White (1998)

This is the least clear-cut choice on the roster.

White, Steve Finley (2000), Chris Young (2010) and A.J. Pollock (2015) are all D-back center fielders who made the All-Star Game, but none started. Luis Gonzalez started the game at center field in 2001, but he was out of position. He exclusively played left field for the D-backs. (He’s set as the designated hitter on this roster.)

White earns the spot here for his performance in the game. White holds the Diamondbacks All-Star Game record with three hits in the game, including a triple. The only other D-back with multiple hits in the game is Damian Miller with two doubles in 2002.

The Jamaican-born player, who now spells his last name “Whyte,” played only one season for Arizona but was the team’s lone representative in the All-Star Game in the D-backs inaugural season in 1998.

Right Fielder

Justin Upton (2009, 2011)

Upton joined Montero as one of two representatives of the Diamondbacks in the only All-Star Game played at Chase Field in 2011.

He didn’t have much success in the Midsummer Classic with the Diamondbacks, going 0 for 2 in both of his appearances. He got a hit in each of his two other All-Star appearances after leaving the team, however.

Designated Hitter

Luis Gonzalez (1999, 2001-03, 2005)

The designated hitter was not in the National League in Gonzalez’s day, but we’ll slide him to DH here.

He has certainly done some hitting over the All-Star break. He holds the D-backs record with hits in four separate All-Star Games (all but 2002), including doubles in 1999 and 2005.

Gonzalez is also the only Diamondback to win the Home Run Derby, earning the honor in 2001. Chris Young in 2010 is the only other D-back to participate in the Derby.

It’s the only hardware the team has brought home over the All-Star break; no Diamondback has ever won All-Star Game MVP. A big factor in that is the American League’s dominance in the game. The NL has only won five All-Star games in the 28 seasons the D-backs have existed.

Starting Pitchers

Randy Johnson (1999-2002, 2004)

Johnson holds the record for All-Star appearances as a Diamondbacks pitcher. He is also the only Arizona pitcher to start the game twice. Curt Schilling (2002) and Zac Gallen (2023) each started it once.

Johnson pitched in the game every year but 2002 and threw two innings during his start in 2001. He did not allow a run in the five innings. In 2004, he gave up three straight singles to load the bases with one out but worked his way out of the jam. He had six strikeouts and no walks across the five innings.

Brandon Webb (2006-08)

Webb is one of three D-backs pitchers to make three All-Star teams. He pitched in the 2006 and 2008 games, tossing a 1-2-3 inning each time with three combined strikeouts. He earned a hold in 2006.

Zack Greinke (2017-19)

Greinke  appeared in the game only one of three times he was named an All-Star with the D-backs. He threw one scoreless inning in 2017, giving up one single and striking out one batter. He earned a hold.

Curt Schilling (2001-02)

Schilling did not enter the game during the 2001 All-Star Game, but started the game and threw two innings the next year during the infamous tie game in 2002.

The Shadow Mountain High School and Yavapai College alum allowed just one baserunner in the two scoreless innings, a single, and struck out three.

Patrick Corbin (2013, 2018)

Corbin only entered the game during the 2013 All-Star Game and was tagged with the loss, giving up one earned run in the fourth inning.

He gave up a double to Miguel Cabrera and a single to Chris Davis. José Bautista drove Cabrera in with a sacrifice fly before David Ortiz grounded into a double play to end the inning.

It was the first run scored in the game, and the American League went on to win 3-0.

Dan Haren (2008-09)

We’ll call it a six-man pitching rotation since six D-backs starting pitchers have been named All-stars multiple times.

Haren threw two innings in the 2008 game and one in 2009. All three innings were scoreless, but he gave up three hits and a walk, striking out two.

Relief Pitchers

José Valverde (2007)

Only three Diamondbacks relievers have been selected as All-Stars, none more than once.

Valverde did not appear in the game in his one All-Star selection with the D-backs.

Byung-Hyun Kim (2002)

Kim blew a save in the infamous tie in 2002.

He entered the game in the seventh with a runner on first and two outs with a 5-3 lead for the National League. After the runner stole second, Tony Batista singled him in. Miguel Tejada followed with another single and Paul Konerko doubled to drive in both runners to give the AL a 6-5 lead. Kim got A.J. Pierzynski to ground out to end the inning.

Joe Mantiply (2022)

Mantiply is the only D-backs relief pitcher who is not a closer to make the All-Star Game. He threw a 1-2-3 inning in the 2022 game, striking out one hitter.
