Posted

The town of Gilbert and Southeast Regional Library will hold their annual Juneteenth celebration, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States, from 10 a.m.-noon June 19 at the library.

Those attending can learn about Juneteenth with activities and entertainment including the opportunity to explore local vendor booths, stroll through a storybook walk, unleash their creativity at arts and crafts stations and design something special to take home.

Entertainment

Entertainment begins at 10:15 with storytime featuring "Juneteenth Is."

At 10:30 a.m. the Kawambe-Omowale African Drum and Dance Theatre offers a glimpse into the cultural expressions of African peoples south of Sahara and their African diaspora through performances of drumming, dancing, singing, storytelling and traditional audience engagement and participation.

Kawambe-Omowale is a Phoenix-based arts company celebrating 40 years in the Valley of the Sun. It has performed throughout the state of Arizona, as well as, outside of the state.

Through public and private performances, workshops, special programs and a weekly community class, Kawambe Omowale invites audiences to experience its art forms.

At 11 a.m., visitors can  join Vibe Tribe for a dynamic performance that celebrates the history and cultural significance of Juneteenth while honoring the pioneers of old school hip hop.

This event blends education with entertainment, offering audiences a vibrant journey through music and history.

Vibe Tribe's performance will pay tribute to legendary artists who helped shape the foundation of hip hop and bring the genre into the mainstream of American culture.

Featuring songs from iconic figures such as Sugar Hill Gang, Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Whodini, Run DMC, Afrika Bambaataa & SoulSonic Force, Eric B. & Rakim, Will Smith, and Tupac Shakur, the set will highlight tracks with powerful messages and infectious, upbeat rhythms.

The family-friendly performance is carefully curated to reflect positivity, respect and the enduring spirit of resilience and creativity. All songs are free of explicit language and promote themes of unity, self-expression and cultural pride.
