The Mesa Public Schools Board found themselves at an impasse during their May 28 meeting over a proposed change to the district’s flag display policy that raised concerns about free speech.
The proposed change is as follows, according to MPS board documents: “The superintendent shall prohibit the display of any flag or other means of messaging any visual or auditory devices by district employees, students and those persons who are contracted to be on district property which conveys political, social or ideological messaging.”
This change would prohibit the display of flags on school grounds that are not the Arizona state flag, the U.S. flag or various flags that are related to academic achievement, class curriculum, extra-curricular and club activities.
