Higley Unified School District is trying to turn teacher collaboration into a systematic process for improving student learning, while acknowledging it could take years to determine how much the effort affects achievement.
The district is in its second year of implementing a common framework for professional learning communities, or PLCs, bringing consistency to a practice some Higley schools have used for more than a decade.
Executive Director of Teaching and Learning Marcus Berkshire said the fundamental purpose is to shift teachers' thinking from whether material was taught to whether students actually learned it.
