Higley district will continue practice to make timely payments

The Higley Unified School District will continue to make certain payments between governing board meetings for fiscal year 2025–26, continuing a longstanding practice permitted under Arizona Revised Statutes.

A district policy, approved again for the new school year that started July 1, authorizes designated district personnel to sign off on salary and expense payments between meetings, provided those payments are ratified at the next regular or special board meeting.

The practice, known as execution of warrants, has drawn criticism from board members Anna Van Hoek and Sara Jarman, who see it as working around board authority, though it is a common practice in Arizona.
