Gilbert relocates Freestone wildlife during major lake renovation

Gilbert is relocating turtles, domestic ducks and fish from Freestone Park as it drains and renovates the nearly 40-year-old lake, a process that has prompted collaboration with animal rescuers as well as criticism from residents concerned about the wildlife.

The town reported Sept. 22 that dredging is complete and the north section of the lake is nearly fully drained after several weeks of drawdown. Two turtles found during that work were safely relocated to the Arizona Herpetological Society, according to the town.

The south lake continues to drain, with additional wildlife collection and relocation planned throughout the week in partnership with two local nonprofit organizations.
