Gilbert ready to assist nonprofits with trap-neuter-return on feral cats

Gilbert is ready to unveil its trap-neuter-return assistance pilot program Jan. 1 to help those who wish to manage the feral cat population.

The program managed by the Parks and Recreation department will support nonprofits in the work and have a budget not exceeding $10,000, Parks Director Robert Carmona said. Carmona presented the program at a Gilbert Town Council study session Dec. 3.

Trap-neuter-return, or TNR, is considered a humane community-based program that involves trapping, then spaying or neutering feral cats, before returning them to their outdoor homes. It is allowed on private property with the owner’s permission but by ordinance has not been allowed on town-owned property without the consent of the Parks and Recreation director.
