Gilbert nonprofit Undie Chest tackles ‘hygiene poverty’ in Arizona schools

A Gilbert nonprofit is tackling a basic need that often goes unmentioned in discussions about barriers facing students at school: having clean, properly fitting underwear.

The Undie Chest, founded by Gilbert resident Elaine Birks-Mitchell in 2021, works with schools and other organizations to provide new underwear and bras to children and adults in need.

In Arizona, the nonprofit works with the Tempe Elementary School District, Tempe’s Threads program serving high school students, the Glendale System of Care working with Glendale schools, and Roosevelt School District.
