Gilbert native serves with Navy unmanned squadron

Posted

Gilbert native Albert Serradell is serving in the U.S. Navy with Unmanned Patrol Squadron 19, the Navy's first unmanned patrol and reconnaissance squadron.

Serradell, a 2014 graduate of Mesquite High School, serves as an aviation machinist's mate. He joined the Navy more than 11 years ago and is  assigned to the Florida-based squadron.

VUP-19's roots trace back to the Korean War, when the command supported allied forces during night interdiction missions.

Today, the squadron includes more than 500 sailors who maintain and operate the MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft system. The aircraft provides intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities for fleet and combatant commanders around the world.

According to the Navy, the squadron plays a role in supporting maritime security and providing intelligence that helps protect global commerce and critical infrastructure.

During his military career, Serradell advanced to the rank of petty officer first class, an accomplishment he described as a career milestone. He credited family members for supporting his service and military career.

The Navy this year is marking its role in the nation's defense as the United States commemorates 250 years of independence. Navy officials note that the service has supported national security and global operations for more than two centuries.
