Gilbert is preparing to update its zoning code to allow more types of small-scale housing, a shift prompted by new state requirements and aimed at giving the town control over how and where these units take shape.
Middle housing — a planning term that describes duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes and townhomes — must be permitted by cities and towns under House Bill 2721, passed during the 2024 legislative session. The law requires municipalities to adopt compliant ordinances by Jan. 1.
Council will consider adopting new code at its Nov. 18 meeting.
