Seton Catholic Prep staff have recapped how its trophy case will have to get a little bit bigger after fall sports success.

The Sentinels’ success this fall was highlighted by two AIA state runner-up finishes in girls volleyball and girls golf.
Here’s how each of Seton Catholic’s seven fall sports fared this year.

Cross Country

The boys program qualified for state again and had two individuals receive medals for top finishes at the AIA Division III state meet in November, where Gavin McGuinness placed sixth and David Williams finished 13th.

On the girls side, Alexandra Hernandez and Natalia Casillas qualified as individuals for state.

Swim and Dive

Seton Catholic swim and dive had 18 swimmers qualify for at least one event at the AIA Division III State Meet. The top individual finish came from Faith Fletcher, who took third place and medaled in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Tackle Football

Sentinels football experienced a revival, notching an 8-2 regular-season record, including a perfect 4-0 in the 4A Southwest region to score the program’s first region title in 10 years and first playoff berth in six years.

Running back Luc Aguilar was named Region Player and Offensive Player of the Year, while linebackers Mika Aisake and Sloan Sweet were named Co-Defensive Players of the Year. Those names led 24 All-Region recognitions by the team.

Also, coach Pete Wahlheim was named Region Coach of the Year.

Boys Golf

Seton’s boys golf narrowly missed out on advancing as a team to the AIA state tournament, but had two individuals — Nathan Ash and Wade Van Kirk — qualify as individuals. Ash had the top finish, placing 13th over two rounds at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen.

Girls Golf

The girls golf team qualified for state and put finished strong, erasing a 10-shot deficit after round one to finish as AIA Division II runners-up. That gave the Sentinels the first state trophy in program history.

Individually, Cynthia Lang medaled, placing fourth.

Flag Football

The program experienced its inaugural year and all of the firsts that come with it, including its first-ever win, 54-0, over Central early in October.

Girls Volleyball

The girls volleyball team experienced highs it hasn’t seen since 2011, reaching the 3A final after going on a playoff run.
The Sentinels finished as the 3A runners-up with a 25-13 record. It’s the first AIA state trophy for the program in more than a decade.

Sophomore Rylan Keane was named 3A Conference Offensive Player of the Year, while Lizzie Steinkamp earned 2nd-team All-3A and Phia Fisher and Hannah Ostrowski each earned honorable mention All-3A.

Keane was also named Region Offensive Player of the Year, while the team notched seven other All-Region honors for their season.
