Chandler Police launch bicycle, pedestrian safety detail

Posted

The Chandler Police Department’s Traffic Section has launched an enhanced bicycle and pedestrian safety detail that runs through Aug. 30.

The detail, according to a news release, involves officers focusing on behaviors that put drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians at risk on Chandler roadways.

Throughout the detail, officers will conduct targeted enforcement at locations with high bicycle and pedestrian activity. Officers will focus on dangerous driving behaviors such as speeding, running red lights, failing to yield and distracted driving.

Officers will also monitor bicyclists and pedestrians for unsafe behaviors, including riding against traffic, crossing streets unsafely and failing to use sidewalks or crosswalks when available, the release states.

The goal of the detail is to prevent crashes, reduce roadway injuries and encourage safer habits among everyone who uses Chandler’s roadways.

Drivers are encouraged to eliminate distractions, slow down and remain especially alert in areas with increased pedestrian and bicycle activity. Bicyclists and pedestrians are also reminded to follow traffic laws, remain visible and use designated crossings whenever possible, Chandler Police stated.

This detail is supported by grant funding from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
