Pending board approval, Joe Bushman will be the next football coach at Casteel High School.
Bushman replaces Bobby Newcombe, who resigned after the Colts were eliminated in the 6A quarterfinals in November, having coached seven seasons.
A news release from the Chandler Unified School District states Bushman is a “highly successful, championship-winning football coach” who has “been recognized for his leadership and the success of his teams.”
Bushman and his family will be relocating from Oregon, where he excelled enough as a high school coach to move into the college ranks.
The past three seasons, Bushman was the head coach at Division III Lewis & Clark College in Portland. In 2023 and 2024, the Pioneers had their first back-to-back winning conference records for only the second time since 1991.
The release states Bushman also led growth of the Lewis & Clark roster with consecutive record recruiting classes.
Last year’s team led its league in total offense.
Bushman started at Lewis & Clark after about 20 years as a successful high school coach. He led Clackamas High School football on its first undefeated state football championship run in 2017. That earned Bushman a state coach-of-the-year award in Oregon.
In 2013, he led Lakeridge High School to the league championship in his first year as coach, the release states. He also led Central Catholic to three consecutive league championships and quarterfinal playoff appearances.
As a three-sport athlete in high school, Bushman was the quarterback who led his team to a state championship.
He was an Academic All-American who graduated magna cum laude from Willamette University and was team captain.
Bushman has a master of arts in teaching from Willamette and is certified in biology and general sciences, health education, and physical education, the release states.
The Colts went 6-6 in 2024, competing in the tough 6A Premier Region.
“We welcome Coach Bushman and his family to the Casteel community, and we look forward to great success as we move forward,” the release states.
