Work at the Tempe Municipal Complex continues as council considers awarding a $3.4 million construction contract to complete structural repairs within the garden level of the building.
Tempe City Council will vote to award a construction manager-at-risk contract to Core Construction during its Jan. 9 meeting to complete the necessary improvements to the complex. Council meets at 6 p.m. at the council chambers in Tempe City Hall, 31 E. Fifth St.
Public works administrative manager Decima Sever wrote in a city staff report this project addresses structural deficiencies throughout the municipal complex's garden level, such as reinforced concrete with exposed and rusted rebar and tree roots and limbs causing structural damage.
“The project also includes Americans with Disabilities Act improvements throughout the garden level and a new drought-tolerant plant pallet with new irrigation,” Sever stated.
If approved, Core Construction will be responsible for providing construction services to complete the garden level improvements, including furnishing any and all plant, materials labor, equipment, services and transportation required for the project.
Sever explained the contract’s scope of work includes hardscape improvements, structural repairs, landscaping, irrigation, and lighting and electrical work.
Funds to cover this contract and related costs have been appropriated for fiscal year 2024-25 and any future years contingent on council approval. Additionally, there is a project contingency amount of $340,000 included in the contract, according to the report.
Payments will be made in installments based on the approval of monthly progress reports and detailed invoices submitted by Core Construction.
The contract notes that Core Construction “shall notify all adjacent or affected residents or businesses at least 48 hours in advance of any street, alley, sidewalk and driveway closures and make suitable arrangements to have all vehicles moved to a satisfactory location outside the closed area.”
Pedestrian access shall also be maintained along the length of the project at all times, according to the contract.
