Tempe City Council will host the second and final hearing for a nearly $300,000 fund transfer that would support the financing of bike and pedestrian improvements on Country Club Way at council’s Jan. 9 regular meeting.
Council held the first hearing at its Dec. 19 meeting, where no public comment was heard on the ordinance. At the Jan. 9 meeting, Tempe City Council will vote on an ordinance authorizing the transfer of funds.
Senior management assistant Sue Taaffe wrote in a city staff report that the transfer amount from another city capital improvement project will provide sufficient funding to complete the first 3.5 miles of bike and pedestrian improvements on Country Club Way from ASU Research Park to the U.S. Highway Pedestrian Bridge.
Taaffe explained that the project’s original scope of work for this section of Country Club Way was to extend the life of the existing pavement, but an updated evaluation of the pavement surface revealed the surface would need to be repaved.
“This transfer will pay for the improvements performed by the project,” Taaffe stated.
In total, the improvements will stretch along 7 miles and will provide improvements including public art, landscaping, raised medians, enhanced sidewalks, lighting, rest nodes and a shared‐use path.
These new improvements will help to:
Reduce potential conflicts between vehicles, bikes and pedestrians;
Create a lower stress bike and pedestrian corridor;
Increase accessibility to major employment, educational facilities and shopping centers.
Tempe City Council will vote on the ordinance at its 6 p.m. Jan. 9 meeting at the Tempe City Council Chambers, 31 E. Fifth St. Meetings can also be watched live on Tempe 11.
