Is socialism really the wasteful spending?

OPINION — Readers, notice the recent GOP attacks on socialism, the enemy of America. You may not notice but several candidates are saying, “the system is broken.” What people don’t realize is America has had a blend of capitalism and the safeguards of socialism for decades now. 

We have turned health care into a profit industry as if free enterprise will save it. America now has about 900 less government-run hospitals than the 1960s.

Using my recent experience this year alone, I have accumulated over $183,000 in medical expenses. Without government supported healthcare also known as Medicare, we would be in trouble. We also have Social Security, another socialist concept.

Let’s explore some more socialism in America and if you hate socialism, then I would suggest you stop using those terrible socialist ideas.

The fire department. Yes, in past days if you did not pay the local fire department, they would let your house burn down. 

We have FDIC banking insurance, another concept that the GOP labeled socialism.

Here are just a few more of those terrible socialist programs. Farm subsidies and farm bailouts; in 2025 we had about 30 billion dollars in socialist farm welfare. 

Here is just a few of those socialist programs in America today: Public Schools, public beaches, public libraries, the department of agriculture, public buses and transportation. Funding of public vaccines, Medicaid, the USPS, public museums, veteran hospitals and health care.

This administration has spent the following public tax moneys: on a military parade, $45 million; ballroom renovation, $290 million; his golf trips, $150 million; new detention facilities, $45 billion; America’s anniversary celebration, $100 million; jet flyovers, $10 million; and now the needless war with Iran, $132 billion. 

So, when they tell you the evils of “free stuff” and socialism, ask them what free things we should be doing away with.
