I trust Arizona’s mail-in voting system; perfect for those with mobility issues

Tempe reader's response to Question of the Week

OPINION — I have used the vote-by-mail system ever since it has been available, and now it is an absolute necessity for me due to serious mobility issues, which make it impossible for me to walk or stand for more than a very short time.

Aside from disability, there are other factors in favor of voting by mail, such as limited or difficult access to voting sites.

I trust the system because I receive email and text notices when my ballot has been mailed to me, when it has been received and when my signature has been verified and my ballot has been counted.

One safeguard already in place is the periodic request to either confirm (by doing nothing) or correct my information (by returning the postcard).

Newly registering voters should have to prove their eligibility and any proven fraud should be severely punished.

Beyond that, every eligible voter should have the option to vote by mail, and I see no reason to make any changes to the current system. As far as I know, available data show that Arizona's system is secure with scant evidence of fraud.

In a true democracy, it should be as easy as possible to vote, as long as sufficient safeguards are in place. I feel that the term “election integrity” is often just a smoke screen for voter suppression.

Limiting or eliminating mail-in-voting is one means toward that end.
