Gas prices climb: Here are the cheapest spots in Tempe

The city issued a request for proposals for bulk fuel services and on May 11 received two responses — from the present vendor, Synergy, at $748,678.80, and Petroleum Traders Corp. at $737,835.70 for 9,000 gallons of red-dyed diesel, 55,000 gallons of clear diesel and 100,000 gallons of unleaded gas.
Gas prices in the Valley rose another 25 cents this week, climbing to $4.37 a gallon according to a release from AAA Arizona on Thursday.
“Rising crude oil prices are behind the spike at the pump,” said Aldo Vazquez, spokesperson for AAA Mountain West Group. “Volatility along the Strait of Hormuz and instability in the region have pushed oil prices into the $90 per barrel range and could continue driving up costs during the second half of the summer.”
The state average rose 18 cents a gallon from the previous week to land at $4.34 a gallon.
Tempe prices range from $4.19 to $4.33. Costco is currently reporting $4.19 with QuickTrip and Arco reporting $4. 33 on gasbuddy.com.
The cheapest gas reported is $3. 88 at Sam's Club at Tempe Marketplace.
At the close of Wednesday’s formal trading session, crude oil rose $2.49 a barrel to settle at $86.83 a barrel. The Energy Information Administration reports that crude oil inventories increased by 2 million barrels from the previous week. At 411.7 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are about 6% below the five-year average for this time of year.
Gasoline demand increased last week from 8.84 million barrels a day to 8.94 million. Total domestic gasoline supply increased from 210.5 million barrels to 211.3 million. Gasoline production increased last week, averaging 9.7 million barrels per day.
Arizona is back among the top 10 most expensive markets in the nation. Arizona ranks seventh in the country, behind California ($5.57), Hawaii ($5.42), Washington ($5.07), Alaska ($4.72), Nevada ($4.69) and Oregon ($4.60).
