Council awards $3.14M contract for Eighth Street pathway in Tempe

Posted

Tempe City Council recently voted to award a contract to a Phoenix-based construction company for a multiuse pathway project along Eighth Street.

Council considered this contract during its March 27 regular meeting, where the mayor and council members unanimously voted to award the contract to AJP Electric. The motion passed 7-0, and there was no comment from council or the public for this item.

A city staff report by Decima Sever, public works administrative manager, explained that the contract for this project totals $3.14 million and includes a contingency funding amount of $314,000.

Funding for the project has been appropriated in fiscal year 2024-25 and future years, contingent on city council’s approval of Tempe’s annual budget.

This project, the Eighth Street Multi-Use Path Project or Creamery Branch Rail Path, will bring about “raised crosswalks, directional ramps, bike lanes, traffic calming, parking and enhanced landscaping” from Rural Road to McClintock Drive along Eighth Street.

AJP Electric will be responsible for creating the multiuse pathway, which includes interpretive signs that pay homage to the native O’odham cultural heritage and railroading, lighting, bike lanes and more.

Cultural elements to be included in the project were developed with the contribution and input of the Four Southern Tribes, according to Sever’s report.
