Tempe City Council recently awarded contracts totaling $2.5 million to several firms to provide maintenance and service repairs on fire apparatus and heavy vehicles for the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department.
Council voted to award contracts to four firms: Fire Truck Solution, Velocity Truck Centers, RWC Group and the WW Williams Co. The contracts were approved during the March 6 regular council meeting, passing in a 7-0 vote.
Lisa Goodman, senior procurement officer, explained in a city staff report Tempe issued a request for proposal to establish a contract for maintenance and repairs on the city-owned fire vehicles.
“These contracts provide scheduled maintenance and unscheduled/emergency repairs to city-owned fire apparatus and heavy vehicles operated by the Fire Medical Rescue Department,” Goodman stated.
All services provided will comply with the current standards of the National Fire Protection Agency for inspections, maintenance, testing and retirement of fire apparatus, Goodman wrote.
The four firms chosen submitted proposals to the city, even though there were initially 22 firms interested. A committee of Fire Medical Rescue and other staff then reviewed and scored the firms’ responses, evaluating them on cost, overall quality, experience and qualifications, references and quality of the proposal.
The evaluation team recommended the city award contracts to all four firms, stating all “are essential for the maintenance and repair of the city’s fleet of 35 heavy-duty fire and rescue vehicles.”
“The team evaluated the hourly rates offered and considers them fair and reasonable for the heavy equipment industry represented,” Goodman stated.
Funding for these contracts was appropriated in the city’s general fund for anticipated expenditures in the current and future fiscal years, she noted.
