A man who was working on an attic at a Surprise home is recovering from burns he suffered in a fire there over the weekend.

Officials say the man was performing maintenance on an air handler at the unidentified home when he welding torch flashed, causing significant burns.

Surprise Fire officials have not released details on where and when the incident happened.

Firefighters transported the man to a burn center in critical condition after he suffered burns to his face and airway.

Because of the swelling in his trachea, paramedics had to perform an advanced airway technique to secure his airway and ensure he could still receive oxygen.

Surprise Battalion Chief Larry Subervi said the victim’s coworker was able to assist him out of the attic. The coworker then was able to control the fire with a fire extinguisher before fire crews got there.

The house sustained smoke damage and some minor fire damage in the attic but doesn’t have visual damage from the outside.

Subervi said the department doesn’t plan to give any further updates on the victim’s condition.
