Surprise time capsule leaves questions for future generations

Box of city artifacts to be opened in 2076

A little bit of Surprise history was sealed up as the city celebrates America’s 250th birthday.

Mayor Kevin Sartor created a time capsule project where department heads and the city council placed artifacts in a two-by-three-foot wooden box that will be kept shut until 2076.

“A couple of years from now, there’ll be anticipation and wondering what’s in there,” Sartor said at a box sealing ceremony at City Hall on July 1. “I want to capture this moment because whoever opens this box in 50 years should know that we do this with passion, we do this with relentless effort, we do this with love.”
