A Valley Vista High School student was arrested for allegedly making online threats of violence toward the school.
Surprise Police arrested the 14-year-old student on Monday, Sept. 9 when the school resource officer on campus was able to take the student into custody.
Police said the student was not armed at the time of the arrest. Officers said they were tipped off when the student admitted to making violent threats as a dare, just days after a 14-year-old student allegedly killed four people and injured several more at a high school in Georiga.
“We thank the brave students who spoke up to protect their school,” Police Chief Benny Pina said in a statement. “Threats of violence toward our schools are not a joke and will not be tolerated. Those who engage in this type of activity will be held fully accountable for their actions.”
The student has been booked into the Durango Juvenile Detention Center for making a terroristic threat, which is a Class 3 felony, and disorderly conduct, a Class 1 misdemeanor.
Surprise Police has 14 officers dedicated as fulltime SROs across the city.
