Surprise offering sandbags at 5 locations in case of flooding

Heavy rain predicted for the state this weekend

Posted

The National Weather Service is reporting the potential for heavy rain this week, thanks to Hurricane Priscilla in the Pacific Ocean.

The chances of rain increase today, with the heaviest rain potential forecast for tomorrow through the weekend.

Surprise residents in flood prone areas can get free sand and bags at the following locations:

  • Water Well Site, 16849 W. Jomax Road.
  • AZ TechCelerator, 12425 W. Bell Road.
  • Fire Station 302, 18600 Reems Road.
  • 219th Avenue and Deer Valley Road (southwest corner) – temporary location.
  • 183rd Avenue and Norwich Drive (northeast corner) – temporary location.

Residents are asked to bring their own shovel to fill the bags. Anyone needing assistance should call the transportation hotline at 623-222-6031, or email streets@surpriseaz.gov.

These sites are only stocked when a heavy rain event is forecast. If the sandbags run out, they will be restocked unless it is in the middle of the storm when street cleanup takes priority.

To report low stock, call or email.

Designated transportation crews are on-call 24 hours a day during and after any major storm events to check for and remove downed trees and debris, clear clogged storm drains and to assist residents in flooded areas.

To report downed trees and debris in public right of way, please call the Surprise Police Department non-emergency line at 623-222-4000.
