The Surprise Public Library System is joining more than 60 libraries across the county for a summer reading program.

The theme of this year’s program is “Color Our World.”

Library officials wrote in a news release that the theme is taking readers on a “journey of art and creativity, celebrating the myriad ways in which art enriches our lives.”

The program to read and earn prizes begins June 1 and runs through Aug. 1.

Preregistration is already open at SurprisePublicLibrary.gov.

Be sure to select the preferred Surprise library location, then get ready to enter reading minutes starting June 1.

In an effort to reduce learning loss while transitioning between school years, SPLS has a goal of over 4,000 participants in Surprise.

Participants earn one point per minute for reading physical or electronic books (including graphic novels) or listening to audiobooks.

Additional points are earned for attending in-person events. SPLS has a lineup of local performers, programs and hunts to find secret codes while exploring the city of Surprise.

Prizes vary based on the number of points readers achieve. Readers who hit 1,000 points can choose a free book to keep or to donate to organizations supporting youth in the community.

Other prizes include pizza from Lou Malnati’s and Peter Piper Pizza, watercolors, slushies at Sonic, passes to Arizona State Parks and food from Torchy’s Tacos and Texas Roadhouse.

Grand prize and weekly drawings will also bring gifts to some readers.

Among those prizes are art sets, 3D pens, library swag, party coolers, doodle sets, air dry clay sets, water doodle kits and LEGOS.

Readers could also win Fat Cats mini golf packages, Sky Zone jump passes, Childsplay grand prize basket, Harkins prize pack, Phoenix Art Museum prize packs and tickets and Uptown Jungle free jump prize packs.

Full details about the program can be found on the FAQ page.
