International group honors Citizen Patrol for local service

Surprise Police Citizen Patrol volunteers were recognized at the regular City Council meeting on Nov. 19 for their recent win of an international award and their outstanding passion, dedication and lasting impact on our community.

“Our volunteers are the heart of everything we do,” Police Chief Benny Piña said. “Their service and dedication inspire us all to do more, and we are truly grateful for the difference they make every day.”

The Citizen Patrol program recently won the Leadership in Volunteer Police Service Programs Award from the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

“Receiving the IACP award was a great honor for us,” Citizen Patrol Commander Marylene Cayron said. “It reinforced our desire to improve ourselves every day. It reminded us why we volunteer for our police department; we see them as extraordinary people working hard every day, no matter what, for the betterment of our community. Winning this award was better than anything else. It gave us a sense of accomplishment, a feeling of belonging, a feeling to be part of something greater than us.”

In 2023 alone, volunteers of the Surprise Police Department’s Citizen Patrol program dedicated nearly 23,000 hours of service. These volunteer hours translate into an estimated savings of almost $800,000.

Since its establishment in 1997, the program’s volunteers have played a role in enhancing and strengthening police services, while also demonstrating a true spirit of service and an unyielding commitment to the welfare of our community.
