Shadow Ridge High School theater students are adding to their accolades this school year.

The students recently won an Overall Superior Award from the Arizona Thespian Organization for their production of “The Diary of Anne Frank.”

Surprise Mayor Kevin Sartor recognized the students with the city’s Community Champions award at the Jan. 6 city council meeting.

Shadow Ridge theater teacher Gemma Dick said the students began work on the production in September for the November production.

The judging for the Overall Superior Award consists of two judges evaluating two of the school’s three productions on multiple aspects, such as their acting, characterizations and believability and technical aspects like the safety of the production, lighting, sound and costumes.

The Overall Superior Award also awarded the school a mainstage performance at the upcoming state conference.

“We’re lucky enough that they loved our production so much that they scored us an overall superior and picked us as one of the two plays in the state to perform,” Dick said after the students received the honor.
