Overnight restrictions are planned for the intersection of Waddell Road and Sarival Avenue tonight to repair the signal damaged in this week's deadly crash there.
The signal will be deactivated from 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11 to approximately 7 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12. Police officers will be onsite directing traffic during this time.
Additionally, north- and southbound Sarival Avenue will be closed to all traffic at the intersection.
East- and westbound Waddell will remain open with lane restrictions.
All business access will be maintained off Waddell Road. The business driveways off Sarival will be closed from the intersection north to Hearn Road and south to Alexandria Way.
Detour routes are as follows:
Late Tuesday night, a driver attempted a left turn onto Sarival and was struck by another car, which was traveling westbound on Waddell without any headlights or taillights.
Surprise Police and Fire-Medical teams were able to extricate the driver of the car without lights and implement life-saving measures. But 26-year-old Angel Salas Celaya later died at a hospital.
The other driver involved sustained non-life-threatening injuries was also transported to a local hospital.
The Surprise Police Department’s Traffic Unit is still investigating the incident. At this time, speed and impairment are believed to be contributing factors.
