Surprise household hazardous waste program going monthly

City moves to more frequent pickups after successful pilot

Posted

Surprise residents who need to get rid of hazardous waste now have more opportunities to do so.

The city is permanently switching to a monthly system for its household hazardous waste collection program, instead of semi-annually.

The city began a pilot program in September to try the monthly pickup system instead of offering pickups just three times a year. The pilot was a success, resulting in a permanent change to the program.

From February through November, residents can request an appointment for hazardous waste collection pickup right from their driveway during one week each month.

The collection of these materials is split into two types and scheduled separately.

One pickup is for electronic hazardous waste, including flat-screen TVs, computers and cell phones. Another is for all other hazardous waste.

New pickup periods for the rest of 2025 are the following: June 9 to 12, July 14 to 17, Aug. 11 to 14, Sept. 8 to 11, Oct. 13 to 16 and Nov. 3 to 6.

Pickup dates for the first half of 2026 are Feb. 9 to 12, March 9 to 12, April 13 to 16, May 11 to 14 and June 8 to 11.

There are no scheduled pickups in December and January.

Acceptable household hazardous waste items include the following: antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, diesel and fuel additives (five-gallon limit per household), brake-transmission-power steering fluid, degreasers (five-gallon limit per household), car and household batteries, pool chemicals, fire extinguishers and gas cylinders, CFL and fluorescent light bulbs, stain, varnish, turpentine, cleaners, adhesives, oil-based paint, paint thinners, solvents, cleaners and adhesives (10-gallon limit per household), pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and other lawn chemicals.

There are volume limitations for liquid items such as oil-based paints and automotive fluids.

Regular refuse and bulk trash, medical waste, commercial waste, ammunition or explosives, RV refrigerators that contain ammonia, radioactive material, tires, box TVs and vape pens will not be accepted.

To schedule a collection, residents can use the My Surprise app or call customer service at 623-222-1920. All scheduling is based on availability and is first-come, first-served.

When calling, customer service representatives will inquire about what items are to be collected, discuss volume limitations and direct how items are to be packed.

On the date of the scheduled collection, all acceptable items must be placed outside on the driveway and up against the garage by 6 a.m. Properly packaged, sealed and labeled items will be picked up by 4 p.m.
