Surprise Mayor Kevin Sartor presented the city’s Constitution Week Proclamation to the White Tank Mountains Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution at its first meeting of the 2025–2026 year.
The proclamation recognizes Sept. 17 to 23 as Constitution Week in honor of the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. This year’s observance also marks the lead-up to America 250, the nationwide commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding.
Regent Marilyn Simleness formally accepted the proclamation on behalf of the chapter on Sept. 6.
“The Constitution is the cornerstone of our freedom, and DAR is proud to celebrate its enduring legacy,” Simleness said.
Following the proclamation, members enjoyed a program of Constitution-themed quizzes, puzzles and prizes. Refreshments featured a historic “Watergate Cake” chapter member Jeanine Jerkovic baked, along with light snacks and beverages.
The chapter also highlighted upcoming events, including “Bells Across America” on Wednesday, Sept. 17. This annual observance marks the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution by inviting communities across the nation to ring bells for one minute. It happens in Surprise at 1 p.m. to coincide with 4 p.m. on the East Coast.
As part of the national Constitution Week celebration, the public can join Sartor and members of the White Tank Mountains chapter outside Surprise City Hall for this special event. Guests should arrive by 12:45 p.m. to participate.
The next chapter meeting will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Happy Trails, 17200 W. Bell Road.
