Massie still waiting for closure 2 years after Surprise arrest

Rebekah Massie’s body still shakes when she recalls the events of Aug. 20, 2024. The trauma is still so fresh and real, it may as well have been two days ago.

But Thursday marked two years since Massie was arrested at a Surprise City Council meeting for refusing to stop speaking during her allotted time during call to the public.

Her arrest made international news and she subsequently sued the city’s former Mayor Skip Hall, the man who arrested her, Officer Steven Shernicoff, and the city of Surprise as a whole. That case is still in litigation, and the two sides are nowhere near a settlement.
