While there is a call to ban student cell phones in classrooms on a state level, the Dysart Unified School District is already taking steps to answer the issue that rings from local elementary to high schools.
When Shadow Ridge High School and Mountain View Elementary School principals addressed the governing board on Aug. 22, silencing cell phone issues was among the vibrating topics for continuous improvement plans. SRHS Principal Cedricia Hester and Mountain View Principal Debby Cruz mentioned concerns from addressing test scores to improving attendance, and minimizing classroom distractions caused by student cell phones.
On the same day, Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne held a press conference, regarding reattempted efforts for legislation to ban cell phones in classrooms statewide. District 28 Republican Rep. Beverly Pingerelli, whose district include parts of Peoria and north Phoenix, Sun City, and Sun City West, sponsored House Bill 2793 that made it through the Legislature, but Gov. Katie Hobbs vetoed it during the last session.
