Sun City West church hosts travelogue on pilgrimage to Spain

Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church, 13658 W. Meeker Blvd., invites the community to attend a free travelogue highlighting one person’s pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The presentation will be given by Leanne Vaeths 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, in the church’s Fellowship Hall.

Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela is a religious journey to the shrine of the Apostle St. James in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. According to legend, St. James brought Christianity to the Iberian Peninsula. Construction of the present cathedral began in 1075, built mostly in granite, and the last stone was laid in 1211.

In her presentation, Vaeths will cover the story of the Apostle St. James and how the Camino came into being. She will discuss the various routes that pilgrims take to reach the cathedral and will share highlights of her journey and experiences arriving in Santiago.

“My favorite church is one without walls,” said. Vaeths. “Being outside is where I can quiet my mind and be open to hearing the message that awaits me. On the Camino, every day is the same: wake, walk, wash, eat, sleep. Yet each is different from the one before. The mystery and the magic are found in what you experience each day.”

There is no charge to attend the presentation and reservations are not required. Refreshments will be served.
