Joel Watters won the 44th annual Sun City Men’s Octogenarian Golf Tournament March 15 at Quail Run Golf Course, 9774 W. Alabama Ave.

The tourney for golfers 80 and older was held over two days, March 11 and 15, with a luncheon on the last day to recognize winners. More than 100 golfers participated and more than $3,000 in cash prizes were awarded in the longest running octogenarian tournament in the United States.

Watters scored a 66 on the 67 par course to win the scratch tournament.

“That’s the best score ever that I’m aware of,” said Jerry Walczak, who has been the tournament director for 15 years.

Mel Maust won the handicap division with a score of 51 and Bob Wiest was the 90 and over winner with a score of 52, including his handicap.

All three winners were presented with a $100 cash prize and a large trophy, Walczak said.

The competition included five flights, including the 90-year-old and older flight. The tournament is played over both days, with nine holes each day for a total combined score.

“It was fantastic, even though for the first time in 15 years we had inclement weather. It all worked out,” he said.

As the players reached the second to last hole, it began drizzling rain, he said. Fortunately, all the players were able to finish before it began raining heavily.

No player managed to capitalize on the $10,000 or free car for the hole-in-one challenges, he said.

“That’s a shame,” Walczak said. “Two years ago, we had two holes-in-one, but they were not on the holes for the $10,000 or the free car. They’re getting better, though.”

In addition to the volunteers needed to host the event, the Sun City Poms served coffee and doughnuts participants each day.

“I would like to thank all the volunteers that participated this year, as they are much needed to bringing about such a large event,” Walczak said. “I really would like to thank each one, individually, but it would take up a full page in the Independent! In addition, thanks to (Recreation Centers of Sun City) for all your help, again, with this tournament.”

The tournament was sponsored by Edward Jones, Sunshine Services and Liberty Buick.

The 45th annual tournament is scheduled for March 10 and 14, 2025.
