Sun City Posse hosts open house

Event planned for March 30

Residents curious about the Sun City Posse services or the many organizations they support can attend its free open house 1-4 p.m. Saturday, March 30, at its headquarters, 10861 Sunland Drive.

“As I am out in the community, I am always amazed at many residents’ perception of the Posse and what it does,” said Sarah Davis, commander. “Many have shared with me that they thought we were just people driving around the neighborhoods in our marked vehicles and if we saw someone that needed help, we were gracious to accommodate. Our Open House is so important for the residents to see what it takes to do all those vacation watches, take resident’s phone inquiries, check on a citizens welfare, cover community events, be the eyes and ears for the sheriff.”

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office will provide a helicopter, police K-9 unit and more to the event. Its Mobile Command Center and Sun City Fire Department’s rescue and fire trucks also will be available, but law enforcement and emergency services availability is dependent on public safety.

The open house is the Posse’s way of reaching out and sharing with area residents all the positive endeavors the all-volunteer group engages in to keep Sun City safe. As homelessness and other minor crimes become a part of everyday life, the Posse is patrolling the streets and working side-by-side with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office adding additional eyes and ears to public safety.

May Mobility will display one of its driverless cars and inform participants about the technology and safety of their vehicles.

The Lone Mountain Band is providing entertainment throughout the event and there is free ice cream and popcorn. There are also door prizes donated by area businesses. Sponsors are covering the costs of the many free amenities offered during the event.

“You can take your free ice cream into the meeting room and enjoy the music of the Lone Mountain Band while you eat it or peruse the guided tour by uniformed Posse members,” said Theresa O’Dell, Posse media relations.

Posse members will be in each department to talk about what they do for Sun City residents. Visitors can view the internal operation of the dispatch unit, the training room and the various programs like Block Watch, Vacation Watch and Funeral Coverage.

The posse is a community-based organization supported by Sun City resident donations; there is no tax money involved in the operation of the group.

“I think it is a great opportunity for people to get to know who we are and what we do for the community,” the commander added.

The Posse’s 50th anniversary cookbook is available for purchase at the event, O’Dell said. The cookbook sold out in its debut at last year’s 50th anniversary Fall Jubilee, which replaced the 2023 open house, and is compiled of recipes submitted by Posse members over the past few years. Proceeds will benefit the Posse.
