Sun City Posse, COA bind officers together

Service in the Sun City Posse draws officers from a wide range of careers, but all share a sense of community and a need to assist others.

Maggie and Phil Griswold, Phyllis Konopa and Karl and Ann Liebmann met through the Posse and have become the “eyes and ears” of the Palmotillo Condominium Owners Association, said Karl Liebermann.

“We’re a larger, but not nearly the largest, COA in Sun City,” he said. “I don’t know that there is any other condo association that has this many Posse members.”

Located on the northeast corner of West Palmeras Drive and North 102nd Drive, the Palmotillo COA has 10 buildings and 47 living units. But what makes it special, Maggie Griswold said, is the sense of camaraderie among its members and the number of those who share their time helping others as members of the Posse.

“We have a really cohesive COA,” said Ann Liebermann. “I think that extends from so many of us being a member of the Posse.”

The five Palmotillo members met through their time volunteering for the Posse. Lt. Karl Liebmann heads the new Information Technology Department and serves in patrol while his wife, Ann, is a patrol officer. Master Sgt. Phil Griswold is a duty officer, overseeing a patrol shift, and his wife, Maggie, in a dispatcher. Konopa is a patrol officer.

“We didn’t really know each other before we joined the Posse,” Konopa said.

In fact, the Liebmanns had moved into the COA only shortly before joining the Posse.

However, that bond of sharing residency in the same COA and serving together in the Posse, brought them all together in a unique friendship that eventually spread through the entire neighborhood.

“When you have a Posse member (in the COA), they know who to call. We’re trying to build throughout Sun City just what Palmotillo has done - a community that all watch out for each other,” Maggie Griswold said. “We happen to be residents who can offer the same information. It’s a more personal contact rather than some nebulous contact.”

Their volunteerism with the Posse makes them aware of security issues, scams, fire department lock box locations and information about various Posse programs that benefit residents, like vacation watch and welfare checks.

“We do know who leaves their garage doors open there,” Ann Liebmann joked.

Volunteering in the Posse can occupy as little or as much time as someone wants to give, said Karl Liebmann, who also volunteers on the board of directors for the COA.

“There is no designated amount of time that I put in,” he said. “It’s just whatever it takes to get the job done.”

Karl Liebmann and Konopa were, however, recognized earlier this month for donating between 500-749 hours to the Posse in 2023.
