Sun City church to host seminar on dementia

The American Lutheran Church of Sun City is hosting a seminar to inform residents about the signs of healthy age-related brain changes versus cognitive impairment and dementia. The event, beginning with a continental breakfast, will be 8:30 a.m.-noon Thursday, Feb. 26, at the church, 17200 N. Del Webb Blvd.

According to the National Institute on Aging, around one in every three adults aged 85 or older have some form of dementia. This occurs when neurons in the brain stop working, losing connection with other brain cells.

“I think it can be a scary topic for people to think about,” Pastor Lisa Hackler said. “I’m hoping that part of what the speaker can do is give actual factual information, as well as take some of the fear away for folks.”
