Woman faces manslaughter, DUI charges in Surprise collision

A 29-year-old woman faces several charges, including manslaughter, following a collision early on New Year’s Day in Surprise.
Police said they responded at about 1:55 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1, to Bell Road and Parkview Place regarding a report of a collision involving three vehicles.
Investigators determined 29-year-old Chalsey Brown was driving west on Bell Road when she struck the rear of another vehicle also traveling westbound on Bell Road.
The impact from the collision forced the victim, Daniel Duran, 57, to lose control and swerve toward a median hitting a palm tree, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Despite causing a fatal collision, the suspect continued driving westbound along Bell Road,” police said in a release.
“She then sideswiped another victim’s vehicle causing minor damage before hitting a tree in the median, disabling her own vehicle.”
Officers said the suspect refused to get out of her vehicle, and once in custody a DUI investigation showed “Brown was impaired at almost three times the legal limit,” according to Surprise police.
Investigators determined that impairment and speeding were factors in the collision.
Brown was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on manslaughter, endangerment and DUI charges.
