Violent crime spike at First Friday event in downtown Phoenix leads to curfews

Posted

Phoenix police will enforce juvenile curfews at this week's First Friday Art Walk & Market because of an increase in "violent crime towards teenagers," authorities said Thursday.

Anyone under the age of 16 not accompanied by a parent, guardian or adult after 10 p.m. will be arrested and cited, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.

Any juvenile over the age of 16 not accompanied by a parent, guardian or adult after midnight will be arrested and cited.

“The hope is that enforcing these curfew laws will bring a reduction in violent crime towards teenagers and improve the experience of people attending First Friday,” the release stated.

First Friday  takes place in the Roosevelt Row Arts District, a neighborhood  roughly bounded by McDowell Road, Van Buren Street, Central Avenue and Seventh Street.
