Vacationers seeking cooler temperature along the Mogollon Rim or White Mountains should prepare for restrictions on SR 87 and US 60 as they head north.
The Arizona Department of Transportation said Monday that one northbound lane of SR 87 is closed and the speed limit is reduced between mileposts 244 and 245 due to extensive pavement damage from a tanker fire that occurred on Friday.
ADOT “is developing plans to complete an environmental cleanup and repair the northbound roadway through this area about 10 miles south of Payson,” officials said in a release.
US 60 has reopened after a days-long closure due to the Flying V Fire, but drivers should plan for delays as fire crews monitor conditions, according to ADOT.
Between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m., there is a single-lane closure in both directions between mileposts 300 and 303, with a pilot car guiding traffic through the area about 35 miles south of Show Low. There are no restrictions between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., ADOT reported.
Transportation officials advise:
Make sure fuel tanks are at least three-quarters full.
Make sure vehicle air conditioning is functioning properly.
Pack a cooler with cold drinking water and healthy snacks.
Have an umbrella, sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat and loose-fitting, light-colored cotton clothing for sun protection.
