Valley drivers catch a break from major freeway work this weekend

State transportation officials said there will be no full freeway closures for improvement projects along Valley freeways this weekend.

The biggest challenge to drivers in the East Valley is Tempe where water line repair work continues.

The eastbound US 60 ramp to southbound Loop 101 will be closed until approximately Oct. 30 for city of Tempe water line repair work. The eastbound US 60 off-ramp at McClintock Drive is also closed.

Alternate routes include exiting eastbound US 60 to southbound Rural or Dobson roads and using Baseline or Guadalupe roads to access southbound Loop 101 or McClintock Drive, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Here are some other areas where Arizona Department of Transportation officials said work will take place Friday-Monday, Oct. 7-10:

  • Northbound Loop 101 frontage road (Price Road) will be closed between Elliott and Guadalupe roads in the East Valley from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for maintenance. The northbound Loop 101 off-ramp at Guadalupe Road will remain open. Detour: Consider using northbound Dobson Road, McClintock Drive or Rural Road as alternate routes. Local access will be maintained during the frontage road closure.
  • Northbound I-17 will be narrowed to three lanes (right lane closure) between Thunderbird and Greenway roads in Phoenix from 10 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday for removal of concrete barriers related to drainage project.
  • I-17 will be narrowed to two lanes (HOV and left lane closure) in both directions near the light rail overpass between Dunlap Road and Peoria Avenue in Phoenix from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday so Valley Metro can install “sign structure” in the median.
  • Southbound I-17 frontage road will be closed between Glendale and Bethany Home roads in Phoenix daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for electrical work. Police officers will assist motorists whose destinations are only accessible via the frontage road.
  • Southbound Loop 101 ramp to westbound Loop 202 will be closed from 9 p.m. Sunday to 4 a.m. Monday for maintenance work. Detour: Southbound Loop 101 traffic can exit at Price Road to travel southbound to access westbound Loop 202.
