An Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper prevented a truck from crashing into a baseball field in Scottsdale by using a grappler device to bring the Ford pickup to a stop, authorities said.
The trooper was driving southbound on Loop 101 near Talking Stick Way about 3:20 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, when he saw the pickup sideswipe several vehicles before stopping beside the highway, DPS reported in a release on Friday, March 3.
The trooper pulled over and saw that the man driving the truck was having a medical emergency.
He was unable to open the locked driver-side door, and "the pickup truck suddenly began to accelerate down a dirt embankment away from the highway,” DPS officials said in the release.
“He jumped back in his patrol vehicle and followed as the pickup crossed both lanes of traffic on 93rd Street, drove through a parking lot, then headed toward a baseball field at Salt River Fields.”
The trooper deployed his vehicle’s Grappler Police Bumper, which secured one of the truck’s rear tires, bringing it to a stop in front of the baseball field, the release stated.
He helped get the driver out of the vehicle and provided basic first aid until medical personnel arrived and took the man to a hospital.
