A 34-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a shooting spree that began along Interstate 10 and ended at the Marriott Phoenix Resort Tempe at the Buttes, police said.
The series of events began about 2 p.m. March 18 when the suspect was standing on the side of the freeway, waving a gun, according to a Tempe Police Department release.
The suspect fired the gun at a passing vehicle. The driver, who was not injured, exited the freeway to contact police.
The suspect then took off on foot, hopping a fence into the parking lot of Tempe Diablo Stadium before running toward the resort, police said.
“While fleeing, the suspect confronted two third-party contracted employees of the resort, ordering them to the ground before firing several rounds, striking the two victims. Their injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening and were sustained from shrapnel, not direct gunfire,” the release stated.
The victims ran away from the suspect who continued through the resort grounds and attempted to take a car from a woman who ran away.
Tempe officers found the suspect in the resort parking lot and arrested him without incident.
The hotel was evacuated, and police secured the area to make sure there were no other victims or threats, according to the release.
An investigation is underway.
