Tempe officer recovers from shooting, suspect identified

Posted

The 32-year-old man who was killed in a shootout with Tempe police has been identified, and the officer who was injured is recovering in a hospital, authorities said Saturday.

The shooting occurred about 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13 after officers identified and attempted to arrest a man who had a felony warrant for drug sales, according to a release from the Tempe Police Department.

The suspect was parked at a Circle K gas pump at Baseline and Rural roads.

Officers contacted the suspect, who took off in his car across Rural Road onto Lamplighter Lane, where he got out of his car and ran, police said.

Officers were chasing the suspect when the man pulled out a gun and fired at them, hitting one in the leg.

Officers returned fire, striking the suspect. Matthew Granado was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer who was hit underwent “successful surgery,” police said.

The Mesa Police Department is the lead agency in the officer-involved shooting.
