Tempe makes $180K available to artists for public projects

Requests out for movable works, Kiwanis Park display

Deadlines are approaching for artists to submit their qualifications and proposals for two projects in Tempe.

The city is making available $150,000 to be split among two to five artists for movable works that can “weave creative play throughout” the community. The project is called TEMPEary Play.

Another $30,000 will be used to created a permanent display as part of the Kiwanis Park North improvement projects, according to the city.

The TEMPEary Play art opportunity is looking for artists who will create interactive artworks, imaginative games or “creative engagements” that can travel throughout the Tempe community during the 2023-24 season of events, city officials said.

“This opportunity requires an artist who can create a work of art that will enliven the imaginations of all who encounter it and actively encourage their participation,” officials said.

The events to showcase the art will be from September 2023 through May of 2024 and range in scale.

Selected artists will work with the city’s public art staff to determine the exact events and dates for their artwork to be showcased.

The deadline for submitting a proposal is Wednesday, March 8. More details available here.

The Kiwanis Park project will require the artist chosen to work with the design team through the first phase of the renovation.

“The goal for the public art portion of this project is to provide a unique artistic experience for all who visit this regional park. Innovative approaches are encouraged and welcomed,” city officials said.

This first phase of renovation is on 17 acres and may include a dog park, renovated restrooms, new sidewalks and trees, improved lighting, ramadas, and an “expanded inclusive playground,” according to the city.

The application deadline is Friday, March 3. More details available here.
