More than 800 people have graduated from the Tempe Leadership program since 1983, and the organization is looking for another group of members who want to gain a deeper understanding of the city’s challenges and opportunities.

The application process for the next class is open and runs through May 15, according to a release.

The nine-month program includes interactive workshops, site visits and networking events involving of Tempe's government, business and nonprofit sectors.

“By the end of the program, participants gain a greater appreciation for Tempe's rich history and culture, as well as the skills and knowledge to become more effective leaders,” organization officials said in a release.

The Tempe Leadership program began in 1983, and its graduates have gone on to participate in civic and community programs, including public office, city boards and commissions and non-profits, as well as volunteering in a number of ways, according to the release.

The program runs from September to May and requires attendance at issue days (mostly on Fridays) and developing and implementing a class project for the benefit of residents or organizations in Tempe.

Examples of issue days include learning about public safety, arts and culture, education, business, health and wellness, transportation and human services.
