The Dolores Huerta Scholarship will be awarded to a student in the Tempe Union High School District whose civic involvement reflects her work in such areas as community organizing and policy advocacy.
The award is for $1,000, and the application period ends on Wednesday, Feb. 15.
Huerta is a civil rights activist and community organizer who has fought for labor rights and social justice for more than 50 years, according to a release announcing the scholarship.
In 1962, she and Cesar Chavez founded the United Farm Workers union.
She received the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award from President Bill Clinton in 1998. In 2012, President Barack Obama bestowed Huerta with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States.
Scholarship Eligibility Requirements:
- Applicants must be a high school senior.
- Applicants must either live in Tempe or attend a Tempe Union High School District school.
- Applicants must demonstrate participation in projects or activities that are in alignment with the Dolores Huerta Foundation in one of three areas:
- Community Organizing
- Leadership Development
- Civic Engagement or Policy Advocacy
- Applicants work can extend beyond Tempe boundaries.
- B grade average is desired.
Applications must be received by email, or in the Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Office, by 5 p.m. Feb. 15. The winner will be honored at the Neighborhood Celebration on Saturday, April 1, at Kiwanis Park.
