A 16-year-old has been arrested as a suspect in the death of a man who was shot Feb. 5 in Mesa, police said.
Armando Medina was arrested Wednesday, Feb. 8, in connection with the death of Marquis Johnson, 24, for a killing that took place Feb. 5 in the 1200 block of North Mesa Drive, according to a Mesa Police Department release.
Police said they received several calls of “shots fired” about 9:40 p.m. Feb. 5. They found Johnson in a parking lot with gunshot wounds. He died at the scene at 10:05 p.m., police said.
Officers said they learned that Johnson and a friend were at the corner of Mesa Drive and Brown when they thought they heard a gunshot.
Three men and a woman walked toward the pair, words were exchanged between Johnson and the group, and a fight began, police reported.
“When Johnson’s friend tried to help him, a male later identified as Armando Medina, pointed a gun at both Johnson and the friend. The group left northbound with Johnson and the friend behind them. When they reached 1230 N. Mesa Drive, Medina turned around and fired several shots, striking Johnson,” the police department release stated.
Detectives said they were able to identify Medina and the female who was with him that night and, through their investigation, officers were led to an area where they believed the males might live or frequent.
On Feb. 8, officers spotted three men in the area where the shooting took place and identified Medina as one of the three, police said.
After interviewing the men, Medina was arrested for one count of second-degree murder, aggravated assault and being under 18 and in possession of a firearm.
