A 22-year-old man has been indicted on one count of first-degree murder in the death of a hiker whose body was found near a desert hiking trail in northeast Phoenix.
Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced Monday that a county grand jury handed up the indictment against Zion William Teasley, who was booked into jail earlier this month after the body of Lauren Heike was found.
“My heart goes out to the victim’s family and the pain they are experiencing losing their loved one in this manner,” Mitchell said. “Our office will work diligently to seek justice for Lauren and her family.”
Teasley was questioned May 4 about the April 28 slaying after his arrest at an apartment complex near Scottsdale and Bell roads.
Heike's body was found April 29 about a mile away on a desert trail near East Libby Street and North 65th Place, police said.
Heike, 29, was attacked from behind, and her body showed signs of trauma, authorities said.
